So, I came to work yesterday to find I was not the first person there for New Comic Day for a change. A police car was there, as was a crime scene van, and the boss's truck. As I walked up to the door, the glint of a million little bits of glass caught my eye, and I realized someone had broken into the shop. The comics!
Panic set in pretty quick when I saw a scattered mess on the floor consisting of anything that was on the front counter. I looked at the new comics display, and nothing seemed missing. I looked at the Showcase comics wall, and once again, there was nothing missing. As we cleaned, it became pretty clear that everything was accounted for and nothing was missing.
My theory: someone was looking for cash, chunked a brick into the large window by the register, found it empty (which should have been clear to them before busting in because we leave the empty drawer open), and then in frustration, dumped everything off the counter.
I don't even think any of the comics that were on it were damaged, and it takes almost nothing to damage a comic! Truly, a kingpin of crime was behind the intrusion.
The register DID lose its programming, however. That means I had to manually calculate the tax on every purchase on a very busy day. And I had to work next to an open door letting in muggy Texas humidity for a few hours. So, I wouldn't say the attempt was completely ineffective, as I was kind of annoyed. For a bit.
Thanks to everyone who expressed concerned yesterday, and to everyone who had to hear the story over and over again. You just know that no little inconvenience is going to slow us down on New Comic Day, though.
